Surfing
The East Coast of Tasmanian is well known for their good waves especially after winter lows pass into the Tasman Sea. The coast from Scamander to Orford has some popular surf beaches. The mouth of the Scamander River is a popular spot. Locally known as the “Surf Coast” with miles of long white beaches where the surf rolls in reliably. Surf year round, the climate is mild, even in winter. East Coast Surf Report
Fishing
Scamander is a well serviced town known for its easily accessible beach and river mouth. The Scamander River is popular amongst anglers with great Bream fishing spots dotted along the shores, or try your luck from the beach with a surf rod and hook a black back salmon, tailor, flathead and various other species.
Swimming and Beaches
Clean, uncrowded beaches and clear, pristine water with miles of sandy white shoreline to stroll on. Scamander river mouth, next to our Villas, also provides shallow and protected still water for children to play in.
Shelly Point has spectacular ocean views. It is a popular spot for surfing and surf fishing. The area is also a shell collectors paradise, providing hours of fun adults and children alike.
Bushwalking, Nature Walks and Birdwatching
Scamander Conservation Area (Winifred Curtis Reserve) Rich Aboriginal history is evident in this area. Middens and the presence of tools and stone assemblages indicate that Aboriginal people used this part of the coast extensively. Mussel, abalone, rock whelk and warrener appear to have been the most commonly eaten shellfish. Small quantities of seal and macropod (kangaroo or wallaby) bone are also found in the middens.
The Scamander Forest Reserve is situated on the banks of the Scamander River. Excellent for boating and fishing, try your hand at bream fishing in the upper reaches of the Scamander River, or other species including trout, cocky salmon and trevally. Picnic in beautiful bush surrounds and keep an eye out for the local wildlife!
Diana’s Basin Lagoon is home to an outstanding geological formation of folds (ancient rock formations) and is also great for the walker to view stunning coastal views, and bird watching.
